Allergy-Friendly Snack: Jaxs Monster Pop Snack Mix

Disclosure: I received samples in order to facilitate this review. All opinions are my own.

Working at an elementary school, I see first-hand how many kids deal with food allergies. Alas, both of my own kids still need to carry around an epi-pen and are careful to avoid all foods with nuts. Jaxs Monster Mix started as an idea of a mom in search of a wholesome allergy-friendly snack for her own child with food allergies.

Jaxs offers a few different varieties, but the variety we tried was Jaxs Monster Pop Mix. This unique snack mix contains gluten-free sea salt pretzel twists, vegan cheesy corn nuggets, and sweetened banana chips.

Jaxs Monster Pop Mix is delightfully crisp and crunchy. It is a little bit salty and a little bit sweet, so it satisfies any snack craving. In addition, this mix is non-GMO, gluten-free, vegan, nut-free, Kosher, and contains no artificial colors.

Each one ounce bag contains 140 calories, and is the perfect size to take on the go. My not-so-little soccer player appreciated it for his post-game refueling.

If you are looking for an allergy-friendly snack that will appeal to kids, check out Jax’s Monster Pop Mix!

Discover New Korean Treats With Seoulbox

Disclosure: I received a sample in order to facilitate this review. All opinions are my own.

It seems like Korean culture has been receiving a lot of attention lately, and there is actually a name for this phenomenon: Hallyu Wave or Korean Wave. My daughter and I like to watch Korean dramas (my favorites are Start-Up and Crash Landing On You). In addition, everyone in our family enjoys eating Korean food. Therefore, when I heard about Seoulbox, I was intrigued.

Seoulbox is a subscription box that delivers samples of Korean culture straight to your door.

What Is Inside A Seoulbox?

The contents vary each month, but this is what I received in my Seoulbox:

I found the booklet that came inside the Seoulbox to be both helpful and interesting in deciphering the contents of the box. The booklet also contains a lot of fun facts about Korean pop culture.

Drinks

  • KANU Mild Roast Americano Coffee: I am a fan of Korean instant coffee, but it has been a while since I drank it. These little packets are quite convenient.
  • Vita 500: After doing a little internet research, it appears this drink is apple juice-based, with added Vitamin C. The small bottle is cute and the promise of energy is appealing.

Savory Snacks

  • Tteokbokki Snack (pictured): It is interesting to see these spicy rice cakes in snack form. They are described as “sweet, spicy and savory”. The package features a cute chili pepper that says “So hot!!” These bite-size snacks have a kick at the end.
  • Simtong Potato Chips: These chips are flavored with Gochujang (Korean chili paste), which I think is delicious. I would not be surprised to see more American snacks adopting this flavor profile.
  • Hosigi Soysauce Chicken Snack: Have you had KFC, Korean Fried Chicken, that is? Apparently Hosigi is a well-known Korean fried chicken chain, and these crunchy snacks are based on their soy sauce fried chicken. Even though it is just a sample, this bag is big enough to share. My son and husband gave this snack a thumbs up.

Meal Time

  • Baek (White) Myun: This packet of instant ramen has a seafood and beef-based broth that is a little spicy. I am looking forward to trying this one.

Goodies

  • BTS Boy With Luv Hand Towel: This would be a lovely surprise for any BTS fan. The towel is a nice size and has a plush feel. My daughter gave this to her friend who is a BTS superfan and she was thrilled.
  • Tangerine Wash-Off Mask: Koreans are known for taking care of their skin, so I like that this Seoulbox included skincare products. This mask comes in powder form, which you mix with a little water to make a paste. I tried it, and my skin felt smoother!
  • Cure: the First Solution Aloe Mask: I had my daughter try this mask after she had a long day at the beach. She said it felt hydrating and soothing.

Sweet Snacks/Treats

  • Vita500 Jelly: This is the Vita500 drink in jelly form. The booklet mentions that Vita500 is often seen in Korean dramas, so I guess I will have to keep my eye out for it.
  • Chocopie Banana: This was one of the few snacks that I was already familiar with. I had never tried the banana flavor before, though. I find it interesting that banana seems to be a popular flavor of sweets in Korea. Chocolate, banana and marshmallow sounds like an appealing combination to me!
  • Franzzi Chocolate Yogurt Cookie: This snack features sandy cookies with yogurt cream, which sounds yummy.
  • Dalgona Potato Chips: Dalgona became popular in America due to Squid Game, but this is the potato chip version.
  • Green Tea Crepes Snack: I seem to like anything flavored with Green Tea, so I am sure this will be my cup of tea!
  • Kopiko Coffee Candy: I have tried this coffee candy before-it has a true coffee flavor.
  • Yuja Cheesecake: Yuja is like a sweet lemon and I had not heard of it before. I am looking forward to trying this one.
  • Chewy Bungeo-ppang: This is described as a fish-shaped snack with cream filling, so I am wondering if it is like Taiyaki (a Japanese fish-shaped snack).

Trying Trader Joe’s: Ube Mochi Waffles

Scanning the aisles for new and/or limited time items at Trader Joe’s is always fun. I have been reading the Trader Joe’s Frequent Flyer since I was a kid, before I was ever in charge of grocery shopping for a household. My son and I enjoy also listening to the podcast Inside Trader Joe’s, which often inspires me to look for new products.

Today I am sharing our thoughts about Trader Joe’s Ube Mochi Pancake & Waffle Mix. This seasonal item has appeared on shelves during the late spring for the past couple of years. I am not sure about the reason behind the timing; I don’t believe ube (purple yam that is popular in the Philippines) is seasonal,, but I could be wrong.

First of all, I am a fan of the cheery packaging and bubble letter font. This would make a nice addition to a breakfast-themed gift basket.

Clear directions on the back of the box.

Nutritional facts and ingredients for those who care…

I poured the mix into the mixing bowls and added water, eggs and oil (butter can also be used instead). Interestingly, the ratios are the same for making pancakes or waffles. Given a choice, I usually choose to make waffles because they I find them to be less finicky and I adore crisp edges.

After quick whisk, the batter turns into a pretty purple color, presumably from the purple yam puree and vegetable juice.

The aroma of these waffles wafted through our home and brought my teenage kids downstairs for a lazy Saturday breakfast.

As you can see, the waffles had a nice golden exterior, with a light purplish hue on the inside. Everyone in my family enjoyed these Ube Mochi waffles. The ube flavor was present, but subtle. My favorite aspect of these waffles was the chewy consistency thanks to the sweet rice flour. Hats off to Trader Joe’s for once again allowing us to take an international culinary journey while still wearing our pajamas.

Going Wild For Wild Planet Foods Sustainable Seafood

Disclosure: I received samples in order to facilitate this review. All opinions are my own.

I have been trying to increase our family’s intake of DHA Omega‑3s, which are linked to reduced inflammation, improved blood flow as well as optimized heart and brain health. Therefore, I was excited to learn more about Wild Planet Foods, which specializes in canned seafood that cares about the planet. Read more about their commitment to sustainable fishing practices here.

Wild Planet Albacore Wild Tuna

When I opened my first can of Wild Planet Albacore Wild Tuna, I could immediately tell a difference between Wild Planet and other brands of canned tuna. The directions say not to drain it, because the tuna is only packed with the natural juices from the tuna itself (no extra water or oil is added).

My son made a quick tuna salad for a picnic lunch by simply adding some olive oil-based mayo and relish to the Wild Planet Albacore Wild Tuna.

I remember my mom making tuna salad sandwiches for dinner on the days we had piano lessons because there was no time to cook! Having some cans of Wild Planet tuna ready to go in your pantry can definitely be a timesaver.

Wild Planet Skipjack Wild Tuna

One of my kids’ favorite snacks is onigiri, which are Japanese rice balls with filling. We recently bought tuna and salmon onigiri from a grocery store in Little Tokyo, so I thought why not make them at home?

I mixed a can of Wild Planet Skipjack Wild Tuna with a tablespoon of mayo and a couple of squirts of sriracha.

Using my onigiri mold (this can also be done with your hands), I scooped in some rice, layered some of the tuna mixture and topped it with more rice. The mold helps you achieve the perfect traditional triangle shape.

Serve with some sheets of nori (seaweed) for a quick and easy snack! One can of Wild Planet Skipjack Wild Tuna and two cups of rice (before cooking) was enough to make eight onigiri.

Wild Planet Tuna Ready-To-Eat Meals

Wild Planet also sent me a few of their Wild Tuna Ready-To-Eat Meals. These meals are perfect for eating on the go because they do not require any refrigeration, heating, cooking or additional preparation. They would be perfect for my son and husband to pack for their next Boy Scout camping trip.

The Wild Planet Ready-To-Eat Meals come in three flavors:

  • Wild Tuna Pasta Salad
  • Wild Tuna White Bean Salad
  • Wild Tuna, Bean & Corn Salad

I brought the Wild Tuna Pasta Salad along on our picnic. The chunks of tuna were sizable and the flavors from the tomatoes, red peppers, olives and pasta melded well together. It was surprisingly filling!

Where To Purchase Wild Planet Foods

Wild Planet Foods are available online, Sprouts, Ralphs, and a store near you. I have also been stocking up on cans of Wild Planet tuna at my local Costco!

Pop Daddy Pretzels and Popcorn Pack A Punch

Disclaimer: I received samples in order to facilitate this review. All opinions are my own.

One of my favorite finds from Expo West 2022 was Pop Daddy Snacks. Their boldly flavored pretzels and popcorn are highly snackable (and difficult to stop eating!). Their motto is “Bold Snacks made with Big Heart,” and this care is evident in the quality of their products.

Pop Daddy Pretzels

Pretzels are one of my favorite snacks in the salty category. However, Pop Daddy really elevates the pretzel experience with their innovative and delicious flavors.

Pop Daddy pretzels are available in the following flavors:

  • Yellow Mustard
  • Dill Pickle
  • Cinnamon Sugar
  • Garlic Parmesan
  • Perrin Beer Cheese
  • Hot Sauce
  • Peppercorn Ranch
  • Smoked Gouda
  • Maple & Brown Butter

That’s quite a lineup, right? When I was at their booth at Expo West, I had a difficult time choosing which flavors to sample since they all sounded so good. Pop Daddy uses natural ingredients and each flavor really comes through with their pretzels. Each individual pretzel is coated with just the right amount of seasoning, which results in a craveable and crunchy snack.

This guy gives the Pop Daddy Garlic Parmesan pretzels his seal of approval!

Pop Daddy Popcorn

As its name would suggest, Pop Daddy’s original product was popcorn. The founder wanted to make a healthier alternative to microwave popcorn which can contain questionable chemicals and artificial flavors. Pop Daddy popcorn uses pure olive oil and natural ingredients, so you do not have to feel guilty about munching away. Pop Daddy popcorn is available in the following flavors:

  • Original
  • Kettle
  • Butter
  • White Cheddar
  • Dill Pickle
  • Chipotle BBQ
  • Hot Sauce
  • Black Pepper
  • Smoked Gouda
  • Garlic

Pop Daddy uses non-GMO kernels grown on family farms in Michigan and Indiana. As soon as I opened the bag I immediately noticed that each piece of popcorn is fluffy and tender. It turns out that Pop Daddy uses a special type of popcorn with little hull, so there is less of the often annoying hard part of the kernel. Just as with their pretzels, Pop Daddy popcorn’s flavors are bold and addictive!

Snack Better With Brave Good Kind Tender Chicken Bites

Disclosure: I received samples in order to facilitate this review. All opinions are my own.

My son is starting to have a growth spurt and it seems like he is constantly on the search for something to eat. The challenge for me is to find non-junky snacks that will help fill him up. At Expo West I found a delicious snack for him with natural ingredients: Brave Good Kind Tender Chicken Bites.

When I first heard about these chicken bites, I was a little skeptical. While I am a fan of beef jerky, I have never tried a chicken version. However, we found these Tender Chicken Bites to be quite tasty. They really are tender, unlike many other types of tough jerky that can be difficult to chew. Each bite is very flavorful-my son could not stop eating them!

Brave Good Kind Tender Chicken Bites are available in three flavors:

  • Original
  • Hot Honey
  • Teriyaki

We enjoyed all of the flavors, but the Hot Honey was our favorite. It was not too spicy (at least to our palate), but had a nice little bite.

Brave Good Kind products have all-natural ingredients that are minimally processed. The chicken they use is raised without antibiotics. Each serving of the Tender Chicken Bites contains 9-10 grams of protein, which makes it a great snack choice to keep you satiated. These snacks are also gluten-free and do not contain MSG. If you are looking for a healthier version of jerky, I would definitely check out Brave Good Kind!

Brave Good Kind products are available through their online store or at a store near you.

Going Crazy For Mary’s Gone Crackers

Disclosure: I received samples in order to facilitate this review. All opinions are my own.

ExpoWest is happening this week, and one of the many exhibitors that will be showcasing their natural food products will be Mary’s Gone Crackers. Mary’s Gone Crackers are organic, plant-based and gluten-free. I had the opportunity to try out a few different varieties, and they are not your “ordinary” crackers.

The “Original” Mary’s Gone Crackers contain four key, whole ingredients – brown rice, quinoa, flax and sesame seeds. They come in four flavors:

  • Original
  • Jalapeno
  • Black Pepper
  • Herb

The Super Seed Mary’s Gone Crackers add pumpkin seeds and sunflower seeds to the mix. They come in five flavors:

  • Classic
  • Everything
  • Seaweed & Black Sesame
  • Basil & Garlic
  • Rosemary

As you can see, these hearty crackers are packed full of seeds and goodness. They are the perfect snack for when you are craving something crunchy.

We also tried Mary’s Gone Crackers Real Thin Crackers. I would say these crackers have more “kid appeal”. They come in the following flavors:

  • Tomato Basil
  • Olive Oil + Black Pepper
  • Chipotle
  • Sea Salt
  • Garlic Rosemary

These snackable crackers contain chia seeds, which I am trying to incorporate more of in my diet. The two flavors we tried, Garlic Rosemary and Chipotle, are both savory and satisfying.

I made a simple mini charcuterie plate with Mary’s Gone Crackers, cheese, salami and grapes. These crackers would also pair well with hummus!

Mary’s Gone Crackers are available for purchase through their online store or at a store near you.

Look For The New Gluten Free Certification Organization Mark #NewGFCO

Disclosure: I received samples in order to facilitate this review. All opinions are my own.

The Gluten-Free Certification Organization (GFCO) provides important information to consumers regarding whether products have been certified gluten-free according to their standards. As you may have already noticed, the GFCO mark has a new look (see below):

Who Should Know About This Change:

  • Those people with celiac disease
  • Anyone with gluten sensitivity
  • Consumers who are gluten-free by choice
  • Parents/guardians of kids with celiac or gluten sensitivity

Thank you to Gluten Intolerance Group for sending me these samples of gluten-free products. (Hopefully I will be able to write up full reviews and host giveaways for some of these products soon!)

This assortment of products shows the growing diversity of gluten-free products. Some of the products I received had the old GFCO mark and some had the new GFCO mark. Keep this in mind when searching for the mark on packages in the store. The switch is still in the transition process.

Can you spot the new GFCO mark?

The wide variety of GFCO certified gluten-free products becoming available on the market is truly exciting, especially for anyone with celiac or gluten-sensitivity. Seeing the GFCO mark (whether old or new) provides peace of mind that the product has met the strictest gluten-free standards through independent testing. Have you noticed the new GFCO mark?

Dewey’s Bakery Cookie Thins Are A Delectable Treat

Disclosure: I received samples in order to facilitate this review. All opinions are my own.

Expo West is fast-approaching, and I am looking forward to attending in-person after a three year hiatus. I cannot wait to connect with more natural food brands and share about them with you. Today I am talking about one of the hundreds of exhibitors, Dewey’s Bakery. For those of you in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, Dewey’s probably needs no introduction. The first Dewey’s Bakery opened there in 1930!

Dewey’s sent us an assortment of their Cookie Thins in the following flavors:

After sampling these delectable flavors, it is truly difficult to choose one standout. Dewey’s Bakery Cookie Thins are all delightfully thin and crisp. As a ginger fan, the Triple Ginger’s use of three types of ginger (candied, pureed, and ground) really spoke to me. The touch of sea salt in the Salted Caramel cookies adds just the right savory note to balance out the sweetness of the caramel. I also appreciate that Dewey’s Bakery uses clean, non-GMO ingredients and no preservatives, artificial flavors or synthetic colors.

I paired the Meyer Lemon Cookie Thins with a mug of green tea for a lovely mid-afternoon tea-time snack. The bright citrus flavor really shines through in these cookies.

Another pairing that would make a nice Valentine’s Day surprise is a small plate of Dewey’s Bakery Brownie Crisps served alongside a cup o’coffee. The Brownie Crisps are perfect for any chocolate lover (like myself).

Dewey’s Bakery products are available for purchase through their online store, or at a store near you.

Start Your Next Asian Meal With Omsom

Disclosure: I received samples in order to facilitate this review. All opinions are my own.

Our half Japanese-American, half-Chinese American family eats “Asian” food for dinner about 2-3 times a week. I put Asian in quotes because I would not call myself an expert in authentic Asian cooking. Our Asian meals typically consist of a combination of meat/tofu/vegetables with rice or noodles. The key component that gives these meals their Asian flavor is the sauce. That is where Omsom comes in!

Southeast Asian Omsom Sampler

I received the Southeast Asian Omsom Sampler. It includes two packets of each of the following sauces:

Each starter serves 2-3, so this sampler is enough for 16+ meals! This was an exciting sampler to receive, as I do not usually attempt to cook Vietnamese, Thai or Filipino food at home. However, Vietnamese and Thai are two of my favorite cuisines to eat when we go out to restaurants.

The Thai Larb starter is made with Red Boat fish sauce, lime juice, cane sugar, and thai dried chili flakes. It also comes with a toasted rice powder packet. I combined this starter with browned ground turkey. (The recipe card suggested ground chicken, but we eat ground turkey more often, so I just subbed it in).

I threw in some fresh spinach, stir-fried everything together, and had a delicious meal with a spicy kick in minutes. The rice powder offered a nice textural crunch that I would have never have thought of adding on my own. The best part about these Omsom starters is that they include all of the ingredients you need in a convenient packet that can be kept in your pantry. If I shopped for all of these Asian ingredients individually, I know I would inevitably end up with half-used, open bottles languishing in my refrigerator.

I also tried the Omsom Filipino Sisig starter with tofu. This sauce was not as spicy as the Larb and had more of a creamy texture. I felt so adventurous introducing my family to such new flavor combinations.

Each sauce can be used with a variety of proteins, including seafood, chicken or pork. I think I will have my husband try using Omsom’s Vietnamese Lemongrass BBQ starter with salmon for our family Valentine’s Day dinner. The Omsom website has plenty of recipes using their starters that will be sure to inspire your tastebuds!

Where To Purchase Omsom

Omsom sauces and sets are available through their online store. They are currently offering free shipping for orders $35+. A package from Omsom would make a thoughtful gift for anyone who wants to add authentic Asian flavors to their home-cooking (even if that someone is yourself).
