Volunteering With Second Harvest

Last weekend, k had the opportunity to volunteer with her Girl Scout troop at the Second Harvest Incredible Edible Farm at the Great Park in Irvine.

The girls were assigned to gleaning the green onions first, and then oranges.

The green onions were hard work!

The oranges were much easier.  They even let us take a couple of oranges home.  They were nice and juicy!

Watching the ‘Eaters

Last Saturday we went to a UCI women’s basketball game against Cal Poly SLO.  The Girl Scouts were giving away free tickets, so I thought going might inspire k’s basketball game.  Unfortunately, UCI lost (we don’t seem to have luck with cheering the home team).  By the way, I can’t believe the Cal team we watched lose to UCLA won a game against the number one team in the nation less than a week later!

We came in right during the National Anthem, but we were still able to sit in the second row (I guess that is why they were giving away tickets!)  We even made it onto the jumbo tron, which was quite exciting, as I always thought that would be fun.

They had some fun giveaways during the game, including t-shirts, whole pizzas and In-N-Out cards that floated from the ceiling in mini hot air balloons.  However, we were only able to snag some mini Nestle Crunch bars, which the kids were quite pleased with:

Afterwards, we celebrated Chinese New Year by eating orange chicken and chow fun.  Smile

Krispy Kreme Field Trip

Last night k had a girl scout field trip to Krispy Kreme.  n and I happily tagged along.  The kids basically stood on the ramp by the window and someone explained the donut-making process to them.  There was no direct access to the kitchen, which was a little disappointing.  However, a free warm glazed donut made up for any disappointment!

Build A Bear & Farrells

k’s Daisy troop voted to have their end of the year party at Build a Bear.  This was the first time for k to experience Build a Bear, and she had a lot of fun.  I explained to n beforehand that he would not be participating, and he seemed to take it very well.  (He mainly tagged along for the ice cream at Farrells afterwards).

All boxed up.  I will share a picture of the bear another time.  It is quite cute, with its own Daisy outfit and shoes.

I’ve heard that the Farrells at Mission Viejo Mall is not as crowded as the one in Brea.

The troop ordered The Zoo, with a sparkler!

I borrowed this picture from someone who was closer to the action.

n realized the benefit of having a sister in Girl Scouts. Smile

Pa Kua

Yesterday k went on a field trip with her Daisy Troop to a Pa Kua studio located in the Orange Circle.  The “master” is married to one of the kindergarten teachers at k’s school.  He was great with the girls, and they seemed to have fun doing all of the exercises.  I was surprised that k willingly participated in all of the different drills.  I really like how Girl Scouts is exposing k to a lot of different activities/places that she might not have a chance to explore.

She’s A Daisy

Yesterday k had her first Girl Scout meeting.  I used to be a Mini Scout and continued on to Brownies.  I have fond memories of Girl Scouts and wanted k to try it out too.

Somewhere along the line, I guess Mini Scouts changed to Daisies.

Kaper Chart

My job was to make the Kaper Chart.  I had to google “Kaper Chart”, as I had never heard of it before.  I wasn’t able to find one that I wanted to copy exactly so I busted out my scrap paper and markers and came up with this.  k was very excited to be the flag holder at the first meeting.  Looking forward to a great year!
