As the holiday shopping season is quickly approaching, I am on the search for toys that are fun AND educational. Let’s Start Coding is a line of toys that fulfills both categories.

I recently received the Let’s Start Coding Code Rocket to review, so I had my son test it out. The kit is about the size of a deck of cards, and includes the following:

  • Code Rocket Board with 8 programmable onboard LED lights, a speaker, and 2 buttons.
  • Retractable USB cable that plugs into standard USB 2.0 or 3.0 ports.
  • Reference cards for code concepts including: loops, functions, ‘if’ statements.
  • Tough carrying case to contain all the components listed above.

This kit is recommended for ages 8-12. My 11 year old son was able to plug the rocket into our laptop via USB and follow the directions to start coding by himself within minutes.

The Code Rocket lets you start with the basics of C++ through simple lessons. There are a variety of lessons offered, including:

  • Fade the Rocket Booster LEDs
  • Deep Space Headlights
  • Laser Blasters with Sound Effects
  • Morse Code Light Messages
  • Countdown to Liftoff Sequence
  • Morse Code Sound Messages
  • Hack the Code Rocket

The Code Rocket offers a valuable hands-on learning experience for kids. It would make a great gift to inspire tech-minded children.
