It is May, which means that graduation season is upon us.  My own daughter will be graduating from elementary school next month, and I can’t believe it.  Each graduation is a celebration of achievements and accomplishing goals, but it is also a time to look forward to what the future has in store.  In 50 Life Lessons for Grads, Surprising Advice from Recent Graduates, Janet Holm McHenry put together a book that is filled with sage advice for graduates, from graduates, about navigating life and its challenges.

Each life lesson is only a couple of pages, so it makes for easy reading.  There is also a corresponding Bible verse and practical suggestions for implementing each lesson in your everyday life.  I found many of the lessons applicable to my own life (e.g. Education is a lifelong process, Interruptions can be opportunities) even though I graduated many years ago!

Enter to win a copy of this book, along with a $5 Starbucks gift card.  This would make a practical and fun gift for a graduate in your life!

ExpoWest: Lemon Beverage Edition + Book Recommendation

I am still going through all of the products I tried at ExpoWest.  I thought it would be fun to review them by category.  These are the lemon-flavored beverages that I tried.

Hubert’s Lemonade, Honest Sport (Lemon); Steaz Half and Half (Green Tea & Lemonade); Smart Kids Organic Lemonade

We brought the Hubert’s Lemonade to Citrus Ranch Park, which sits at the base of a lemon grove.  This is the mango flavor, which adds a little twist to regular lemonade.  It contains sugar and stevia.  The packaging puts a smile on your face, and I have liked all of the flavors I have tried.  The bottles would be cute for a party.

Love the citrus-themed playground equipment!

The Honest Sport drink was a new discovery for me.  D likes drinks with electrolytes, and the kids will drink them occasionally too.  However, most of them have artificial colors.  This one is organic, and it still tastes good!

The Steaz Half and Half Green Tea and Lemonade was another new discovery.  I like the concept of half tea and half lemonade (love Arnold Palmers!) I also like green tea, so this is a good flavor combination for me.  There is 20 g of sugar (pure cane sugar), which is pretty high, but less than soda, at least.

2018-04-23

My kids liked the Smart Kids Lemonade.  I do not let them drink juice everyday, so it is still considered a “treat”.  They may not appreciate that it is organic, but I do!  I also like that there is not added sugar.  The sweetness comes from apple juice!

Also, while we are on the topic of lemonade, I just wanted to recommend the book The Lemonade War.  I read this book to the kids at the beginning of the year, and we all enjoyed it.  I liked how it wove together sibling rivalry, friendships, and business concepts into a fun story.  I just saw on Amazon that it is part of a series, so we will have to check out the other books as well!

Martha Does It Again: Martha’s Flowers Review

Am I the only one who misses the Martha Stewart television show?  Yes, I heard she was doing another show with Snoop Dogg, but I never watched it since we do not have cable.  I have a subscription to her magazine, but it just does not feel the same anymore.  However, I still consider Martha the homemaker extraordinaire, and she has another book that shows that she still deserves that title.  Martha’s Flowers, A Practical Guide to Growing, Gathering, and Enjoying, showcases Martha’s classic style and is quite informative.  The photographs are gorgeous–this is a lovely book to have on display.  It is currently living on my stack of coffee table books.

This book is divided into sections by season: spring, summer, and early autumn.  Each section is then divided into chapters by flower, such as daffodil, tulip, rose, and dahlia.  There is a good amount of information on each flower, including ideal growing zones, how to plant, water, fertilize, prune, and arrange.  There are also photographs of each flower while they are growing, and featured in various arrangements.

I do not have a green thumb at all, but I found this book very inspiring.  We recently cleared out some overgrown plants in our backyard, so now we have some room for planting.  How lovely would it be to have a cutting garden?  Right now it seems like only a dream, but at least I now have a solid resource to go to when I get serious about it.

Flowers really do have the power to cheer us up, whether growing outside or inside, in a vase!

Reach Your Momentum Milestones: Live. Save. Spend. Repeat. Review + Giveaway

One of the big financial goals that we set a few years back was to pay off our mortgage by the age of forty.  (I think I will be sharing a post that D has already drafted about that journey in the near future.)  When I read that Kim Anderson, the author of Live. Save. Spend. Repeat., The Life You Want With The Money You Have, along with her husband, paid off their mortgage before they were thirty years old, I was impressed.

Anderson, who has a blog called Thrifty Little Mom, provides solid, practical advice about what to do if you are struggling to get out of debt or are living paycheck to paycheck,  As a couple, we have already implemented many of the money-saving strategies that are offered in this book.  For example, we budget our money into different categories, and we save money through our spending habits (groceries, utilities, eating out and entertainment), etc.  I can personally vouch for these strategies because we have used many of them.

However, what I found the most inspiring in this book was Anderson’s discussion about what she calls “Momentum Milestones”.  She defines momentum as “the strength of a force that grows stronger over time” and a milestone is “an important point in our progress or development”.  Putting these words together can give your life direction instead of “simply surviving the everyday”.  Anderson encourages her readers to evaluate the dreams they have for their lives in the next three years, five years, and ten years.  Then she outlines five steps that are necessary to achieve these milestones.  This section really helped me in thinking about the direction of my life, including with developing this blog!

Finally, I appreciate that Anderson is a Christian, and writes about the importance of investing in your relationship with God.  Although most of the strategies outlined in the book could be implemented by Christians and non-Christians alike, Anderson recognizes that we should always ultimately seek God’s direction in our lives: “We’ll never satisfy our wants until we magnify our need for Christ.”

Live. Save. Spend. Repeat. is now available on Amazon.

I am also hosting a giveaway for a paperback copy of Live. Save. Repeat. by Kim Anderson!

Sage Advice: Always Fall Forward

Tyndale House Publishers has provided me with a complimentary copy of this book.  All opinions are my own.

There are many life lessons that can be learned through playing sports.  As I watch my kids play team sports, I see them developing both their skills and their character.  In Always Fall Forward, Todd Gerelds recounts the many lessons that his father taught him, as well as all of the football players he coached over the years.  His father, Tandy Gerelds, was the football coach featured in the movie Woodlawn.  After reading this book, I see why a movie was made about his life.

The book consists of 52 short chapters,  Each chapter begins with an applicable Bible verse and ends with additional verses and questions to think about.  The advice is practical, yet profound.  For example, in the chapter with the same name as the title of the book, the author remembers his dad coaching him and all of the ball carriers to “always fall forward,” in order to get every inch out of every play.  He relates this to Paul’s determination to continue on despite adversity and suffering and to not look back.  I could see this being a great book to go through over the course of a year for anyone who is interested in sports.  It also contains a lot of good teaching points for coaches that want to develop their players on a deeper level.  There are also applications to working in the corporate world and life in general.  Now I want to go watch Woodlawn!

Green Enough: A Valuable Resource To Live a Healthier Life

You might remember me excitedly talking about a conference that I attended earlier this year called ShiftCon.  Well, the founder of the conference wrote a book called Green Enough and it is being released today!  I had the privilege of reviewing a preview copy of this book and wanted to share some of my thoughts.

Segedie shows readers how to make the best choices possible about what they bring into their homes – from furniture to packaged food – all without losing their minds! It’s not about being “perfect,” it’s about being armed with the right information so that you can put your family on the path to better health. Segedie includes:

· Delicious, kid-approved recipes for readers looking to detoxify their cooking routine

· The brands that contain toxic chemicals and dangerous additives

· How to choose organic produce that’s pesticide-free (it’s harder than it seems)

· Instructions on making the move to meat, dairy, and eggs that don’t contain GMOs, growth hormones, and dangerous pathogens

Segedie’s writing style is conversational and friendly.  Reading her book is like listening to a knowledgeable friend.  However, she is also no holds barred with her language in getting her point across, which may take some people aback.  I appreciate the numerous snippets throughout the book from a well-known pediatrician and a scientist, both of which add another layer of credibility to the advice given.

Here is an example of how the book lays out changes you can make in your home by prioritizing simple steps:

My favorite part of the book is where Segedie creates lists of products ranging from deli meat to cleaning products to hair dye and categorizes the brands as Bad, Better or Best.  Sure, you could do you own research, (and she encourages her readers to do so!) but that would take forever.  These quick cheat sheets are really helpful when you are just starting out in greening up your home like I am.  Green Enough is definitely a valuable resource to live a healthier life.

Fifth Grade Mother Daughter Tea + Father-Daughter Dance

We are a participant in the Amazon Services LLC Associates Program, an affiliate advertising program designed to provide a means for us to earn fees by linking to Amazon.com and affiliated sites.

k is in fifth grade now.  I cannot believe it is her last year of elementary school.  She is also five feet tall now.  How did this happen?

A couple of weeks ago her school hosted a Mother-Daughter tea to talk about those “changes” that are happening, or will be happening in the near future.  I was on the committee to help plan the tea.  Honestly, I did not too much since our head chairperson really took the lead (which was much appreciated!)  I think the event turned out really nice.  The theme was cherry blossoms.  Here is part of the invitation:

We had the parents submit a baby photo of their daughter and then they took a picture of the girls at school.  Then they displayed the photos back to back in an Ikea frame as part of the favors.

2018-03-14

We also had the moms write a letter to their daughter that was included in their goody bags. We showed an introductory video put out by P&G, and a mom who was a nurse did an excellent presentation that was light-hearted but still informative.  There was also some Q & A time.

A lot of the girls actually do not like pink anymore, but I thought the pink-cherry blossom combo was cute.

We kept the food simple.  Tea sandwiches, salad, and chicken nuggets, made by one of the parents who is a caterer.  Cupcakes for dessert.  We had iced tea and lemonade in plastic tea cups.

The nurse recommended this American Girl book, The Care and Keeping of You.  I went over this book with k about a year and a half ago, and I think it is really good too.  I am glad that we were able to talk about it before going to the tea.  I think everything might have been a bit too shocking if we had not talked about it beforehand.  We have not gone through The Care Keeping of You 2 yet, though!

American Girl also has a similar book for boys, Guy Stuff.  I think I will let D handle that one with n!

The very next night our school also had its first ever Father-Daughter dance.

I was not part of the planning committee for that one, but I am grateful that it happened for k’s last year at the school.  Seriously, where is life’s “pause” button?

Book Review: Find Your Brave #RefuseToSink

We are a participant in the Amazon Services LLC Associates Program, an affiliate advertising program designed to provide a means for us to earn fees by linking to Amazon.com and affiliated sites.

It is a fact that in this fallen world, we will all face trials and hardships.  Find Your Brave is a book that offers Bible-based wisdom in making it through the storms of life.  The author, Holly Wagner, shares openly about her life’s struggles, including a battle with cancer.  She offers advice and encouragement that can be applied to a variety of problems that people face: e.g. loneliness, lack of finances, divorce, illness or death of a loved one.  The chapters are entitled:

  1. Rising in the Darkness
  2. Brace Yourself
  3. Let It Go
  4. Keep the Main Thing the Main Thing
  5. Get Your Hopes Up
  6. Courage is a Decision
  7. Anchored
  8. Don’t Quit
  9. Stronger
  10. The Other Side
  11. When You Make Your Own Storm
  12. The Shore

At the end of the book, Wagner includes a section dedicated to Bible verses that offer comfort in difficult times and that remind of us God’s promises.  There are also some group discussion questions for each chapter.  I can definitely see this book being helpful for those who are in the midst of the storms of life.  It could also be helpful if you know someone else going through something and you want to offer help.  However, even if you are not currently struggling, reading this book can instill truths that can offer hope if and when you do face challenges.

Book Review: Be The Hands And Feet

We are a participant in the Amazon Services LLC Associates Program, an affiliate advertising program designed to provide a means for us to earn fees by linking to Amazon.com and affiliated sites.

Before reading Be the Hands and Feet, I had heard about Nick Vujicic, but I did not know much about him.  Nick (after reading this book, you would feel comfortable calling him by his first name too, because he comes across as so personable!) was born without arms and legs.  However, he has not let his physical body limit him in any way.  He is an evangelist, motivational speaker, author, and the director of Life Without Limbs.   He travels around the world and has spoken to and touched the hearts of millions of people.  After reading his stories, and all that he has struggled through and accomplished, one would definitely call Nick “amazing”.  But, I bet that if you said that to him directly, he would quickly point to God as being the One who has allowed him to live such an amazing life.

This book is centered on a quote that is on the first page of the book: “If God can use a man without arms and legs to be His hands and feet, then He will certainly use any willing heart!” –Nick Vujicic.  This is so true.  We might think we have limitations that prevent us from sharing the Gospel with others, but God can empower anyone.  Nick’s unbridled love for God and others, as demonstrated throughout the stories in this book, is truly inspirational.  He lives in Southern California with his family now, so I am definitely going to be on the lookout for opportunities to hear him speak in person.

I was curious to learn more about Nick after reading this book, and discovered that he and his wife have twin girls that were born just last month (in addition to their older two sons)!  This was not mentioned in the book (probably due to the timing), but what an awesome blessing!

Put On Your Gloves: Enter the Ring Review

Tyndale House Publishers provided me with a complimentary copy of this book.  All opinions are my own.

D and I have been married for 13 years now.  We have been a couple for over 20 years…that is half of my lifetime, which is strange to think about.  Over the years, we have learned a lot about each other.  Yet, conflicts still arise and we still need God’s grace in our lives and relationship with each other everyday.

In the newly published book, Enter The Ring, D.A. & Elicia Horton, a husband and wife, write about how it is important to fight together for a “gospel-saturated marriage”.  D.A. Horton serves as a Pastor at Reach Fellowship, a church plant in North Long Beach.  I like how the Hortons are remarkably candid in sharing their relationship struggles, both past and present.  They do not claim to have the perfect marriage, but God’s work in their lives is plainly evident.  The book alternates between D.A. and Elicia’s voices, so the reader receives both a husband and a wife’s perspective.  Enter the Ring addresses practical topics such as communication, finances, and home life, all in a Biblical context with plenty of verses to back up their advice.  I would recommend this book to any couple, whether newly engaged or married for fifty years.  We all need to fight for our marriages in a world that is so eager to tell us it is easier to just give up.
