Date Night in Woodbury/Woodbridge

For our date night last weekend D and I ate at Oceanic Grill in Woodbury.  We had a BOGO coupon (of course!)  The place was pretty empty, which does not bode well for this fairly new establishment.  It appears to be trying to duplicate the success of California Fish Grill.

038

We chose tilapia and white fish, both of which we enjoyed.  The service was a bit slow (especially considering that we were the only ones there), but the staff person was apologetic and we were not in a hurry!

039

040

For after dinner drinks we redeemed our coupons for a free Caramel something or other coffee at Seattle’s Best.  I’m not sure if I’ve been to a Seattle’s Best since going to one in Seattle back in the early 2000’s.  D said Starbucks bought the chain and is now marketing it as the cheaper alternative.  Works for me.

041

Our third stop was to park in the Woodbridge shopping center and walk over the bridge to walk around Woodbridge Lake.  We’ve passed by the lake by car before, but have never walked around.  It was quite pretty, and nice and peaceful.  We admired all of the homes around the lake—very nice.  We only walked around one part, and it did not take too long.  D estimates it is about a mile according to his internal pedometer.

042

045

046

Nice playground—we’ll have to bring the kids.  D also spotted a koi fish swimming in the lake.  There were plenty of ducks and geese.

047

Our final stop was to check out the new Korean store at the Woodbridge Shopping plaza: Assi Natural Market.

049

I am not sure about the correct pronunciation, but it is an unfortunate name for a store in the US, IMO.  Although they aspire to be a Whole Foods for Asian food, sadly, it is not.  Again, I’m not sure how long this business will last, given that there are other better alternatives.  We picked up some bulgogi that D grilled the next day for Mother’s Day.

048

This miso soup machine caught my eye.  That’s something you do not see everyday.

So that was our mini tour of Irvine.  I’m always amazed at how big Irvine is (and still growing).

Watson’s Drug & Soda Fountain

Seeing that n enjoyed our Farrell’s outing so much, when I saw a Groupon for Watson’s Drug & Soda Fountain, I bought it.  Located in Old Town Orange, it definitely has the Old Town feel, down to the lumpy seats.

019

We shared a hamburger and club sandwich.  For dessert, we shared a banana split:

009

It was funny, because it was more crowded at 4:30 p.m. than 5:00 p.m.

011

There were three sauces: chocolate, strawberry and pineapple.  I’ll give Farrell’s an extra star for the fun atmosphere and the chocolate malt ice cream, but not having to wait in line and cheaper prices even it out.

Afterward we took a stroll around the Orange Circle.  During the 5-10 minutes we rested on the bench in the middle of the circle, two different groups approached us (one for directions, one to take a picture).

Bob The Builder Breakfast & La Sirena Grill

Saturday morning, while D was running and doing errands, I took the kids to the Discovery Science Museum for the Bob the Builder breakfast.  I guess I didn’t read the e-mail very closely, because I did not realize that you were supposed to buy tickets for the event online.  I just thought that as members, it was a free event.  Fortunately, it ended up only costing $1 per person, and I was able to purchase tickets at the door.

004

The breakfast consisted of juice boxes, bottled water, instant oatmeal, mini bagels/cream cheese, half donuts, mini muffins, apples and tangerines.

003

Bob was there, of course.  I’m not sure if our kids have even seen the show, but they know who he is.

005

There was also a frame craft, which was kind of fun, but really serves no purpose.  I like my crafts to be more utilitarian.

k had a booth sale in the afternoon  Including the booth sales, k made the 250 box level!

For dinner we went to La Sirena Grill in Irvine since we received a BOGO coupon in the mail.

006

We split one blackened wild salmon burrito (in the background) and one massive plate of carne asada nachos.  I really liked the fresh, chunky guacamole.

LA Zoo

Someone gave us coupons for $1 children’s tickets to LA Zoo so we decided to check it out.  D had never been and I cannot remember the last time I went.  It didn’t seem familiar to me at all, so I guess it’s been a long while.

Hello, Mr. Meerkat.
014
I always enjoy looking at flamingos, but they smell pretty gross.

The kids were most impressed by the Asian elephants.  k said that she’s seen elephants on television, but this was the first time she remembers seeing one in real life.  I guess n won’t remember this elephant encounter either.

D’s favorite was the rhino.

I always like the giraffes.

The howler monkeys were making a racket.

The chimpanzees provided some exciting entertainment.

Don’t mess with this guy.

The newest exhibit is called LAIR, with reptiles and snakes.  In retrospect, we should have gone here first, because it was crowded.  Plus, the kids were losing steam.

We refueled at a place called Dino’s Main St in Lincoln Heights.  We ordered two 1/2 chicken plates which was more than enough food for us.  Crazy that this plate of food, plus 3 corn tortillas plus a small container of cole slaw plus a drink was less than our Intelligentsia bill.

Johnny Rebs’

I was first introduced to the Long Beach Johnny Rebs’ by friends from law school.  They are known for their barbecue and peanut shells on the floor.  On Saturday night we went for the first time as a family to the restaurant in Orange with our Entertainment Card BOGO.  Two entrees were plenty for our whole family.

Brisket Sandwich and BBQ Pulled Pork Melt—yum!

I was a bit concerned about taking the kids there since both are allergic to peanuts, but neither have ever shown symptoms from “airborne’” peanuts.  (There are peanuts at every table, and people are encouraged to throw the shells on the floor).  Sure enough, n started to show some symptoms by the end of our dinner.  We gave him a Benadryl, and he was fine, although it took longer than usual to go away.  Also, not related, we found out that n is allergic to fresh pineapple.  All I can say is, thank goodness for Benadryl!

Rockin’ Baja Birthday

On Saturday night we headed to Newport to use my birthday coupon for Rockin’ Baja Coastal Cantina.  It was our first time at the restaurant so we were not quite sure what to expect.  Parking was definitely a pain, but we ended up finding street parking not too far away.  The coupon was buy one entrée get a Taste of Baja bucket free.  We tried to order two Taste of Baja buckets, but it was a no-go.  At least the waitress was nice about it.  So we ended up with one order of grilled fish tacos and one Taste of Baja bucket—chicken, carne asada, 4 plump shrimp and 2 slipper lobster pieces, rice, beans, tortillas, and honey chipotle butter.

011010

We all enjoyed the food (D and I saved the seafood for ourselves since we appreciate it more!)  The waitress brought a scoop of ice cream topped with chocolate syrup and whipped cream with a candle for me.  The waitstaff didn’t sing, but the people at the table next to us started singing happy birthday.  I think they thought it was n’s birthday because he was on my lap.

Afterward we walked along the pier.

Ad Hoc + Redd

As mentioned yesterday, the final day of our vacation was spent in Napa to visit D’s parents.  D’s brother and sister were also there, so it was a family reunion of sorts.

After church on Sunday morning we stopped in a park in Yountville before going to Ad Hoc for brunch.

191

Last time we really enjoyed Addendum, so we were looking forward to this adjacent restaurant.

198

199

The menu is pre fixe and the menu changes all of the time.  I was hoping that day wasn’t the fried chicken and waffles since we already had tried the fried chicken.  Luckily, it was hangar steak and eggs.

194

Too bad I didn’t take a picture of the menu, because I can’t remember most of the detailed description of all of the courses.  The food is served family-style and everything tasted so fresh and delicious.  This was a garlic bread-crostini type of thing with charred scallion butter.

193

I believe this was an endive salad with some sort of smoked fish.

195

The hangar steak and eggs.  There was also a side of crispy potatoes.

197196

For dessert: plums with crème fraiche and coconut rochers (macaroons).

The kids were able to order a kid’s meal of pancakes and bacon for $5, so they shared one meal and had a little of our food as well.

192

The pancakes were served with more of the crème fraiche.  The bacon seemed dry and overcooked, which is strange considering the restaurant’s mascot is a pig.

Yountville was really crowded and parking was difficult.  While waiting for D to get the car, we waited in the little wooded area behind Ad Hoc.

202201

The kids had lots of fun at Grandma and Grandpa’s house.  Then it was time for dinner at Redd Wood.

206

205

Interesting décor.  It is an upscale Italian restaurant, so we had pasta and pizza.  Our waiter was quite chatty and jealous that n was sleeping during the beginning of dinner because his two year old son doesn’t take naps.

203

It was nice to get away one last time before summer ends.  Can’t believe tomorrow is September and school is starting next week!

Date Night @ The Boiling Crab

D and I are very strategic when deciding where to go for our date nights.  We try to eat go to restaurants the kids would not necessarily enjoy and/or would be less enjoyable if they were with us.  I would say The Boiling Crab meets both of these criteria.  We went to the one in the South Coast/Santa Ana area which is new and spacious—no wait at 5 p.m. (I’ve heard there are really long waits at the Garden Grove locations).
003
We ordered 1 lb. of shrimp (whole shebang-style, medium) for $8.99.  I thought that was a really good deal considering that shrimp is so expensive at the supermarket.  The waitress plops a plastic bag on your butcher paper-covered table and you can go to town—no plates or cutlery here.  Peel the shrimp, give it a squeeze of lime juice, dip it back in the bag to soak up more sauce—yum!
006
The messy aftermath.
005
We also ordered a basket of fried catfish and fries.  It is a large portion—this picture was taken after we had already eaten two pieces.  We ended up taking some leftovers home.  I liked the light cornmeal batter.  This was $9.99, in case anyone is interested.
004
We also ordered a cob of corn to add to our shrimp bag—we need our veggies, right? Smile
As you can see in the background, the atmosphere is Bubba-Gumpish.  A nice big sink in the middle of the restaurant would be nice.  The tiny wet naps they gave us at the end just didn’t cut it.  Since we had leftovers, we didn’t want to extend our date night too much longer.  We made a quick stop into Barnes & Noble to look for some sort of Olympics guide/magazine, but they weren’t in stock yet!  Meanwhile, we’ve been preparing for our Olympics-watching festivities, but more on that later.

Mil Jugos Con Mi Familia

On Saturday we went to Mil Jugos for an early lunch before going to the Discovery Science Museum that is pretty close by.  Ever since I discovered Mil Jugos during jury duty, I have wanted to go back with D and the kids.

021

We ordered a medium guanabana juice to share.  Unfortunately, the kids liked it so much they fought over it and a good 40% spilled onto the table.  Too bad it’s not like Disneyland where the cast members are supposed to get you a new ice cream cone if they see someone accidentally drop theirs.

022

Mil Jugos serves Venezuelan food, and we had three arepas and one cachapa.  Next time I think we’ll stick with the arepas, which are so good, especially with the green sauce (which is nut-free, I asked).  D commented it is like a tamale, but the masa is slightly crisp on the outside, which I like better.  Parking can be tough, but we were there before 11 a.m. on Saturday morning, so it was not bad.  I guess there is a public lot down the street as well.  I think they need to start a food truck—I am sure it would do well.

024

The waiting area has these fun hammocks which the kids enjoyed.

Crystal Cove & The Pizza Bakery

This morning we took an impromptu trip to Crystal Cove. We’ve been there a handful of times with our state park pass, but this was our first time on the wooden trail, which leads to a nice vista with benches. (Coming from the North, turn into the first entrance, and park near the bathrooms.)

This guy was waiting for us to drop some of our snacks:
028

For lunch we went to the The Pizza Bakery in Newport Beach, mainly because we had an Entertainment Book coupon.
032

We ordered Lunch Combo #1 (2 slices of cheese pizza and a drink) and Combo #2(1 slice + 1 topping, salad and a drink).
029
The salad was above average in that it contained kidney beans, garbonzo beans, cheese and a pepperoncini in addition to the regular lettuce and tomatoes.

030
Three slices of pizza was more than enough to feed all four of us, but maybe that was due to the “all-you-can-eat” garlic knots:
031

Towards the end, a trio of young boys came in and proceeded to help themselves to plates of the garlic knots. I assumed they would eventually order something, but they didn’t! They even had the nerve to ask for a cup of water! I went up to the counter to pick up a last one “for the road” but the bucket had been taken away. Oh well, I think we had enough carbs for the day anyway.
