Da Hawaiian Kitchen and Afters Ice Cream

The theme for this weekend ended up being “eating not-so-good-for-you food”.  Part of our dinner tonight was green (spinach) smoothies, in order to make up for it!

It all started when we drove to Huntington Beach to deliver dinner for a family with a new baby.  To make the most of our driving time, I thought it would be prudent to try out a couple of places that have been on my mental list of places to try.

First, we went to Da Hawaiian Kitchen in Huntington Beach to try the famous Chili Peppa Chicken.  We ordered one “regular” and one “spicy garlic”.  This chicken had the crispiest skin ever, and was quite flavorful, too.

Afterward we went to Afters Ice Cream in Fountain Valley.  This place is known for Milky Buns, which is basically a donut ice cream sandwich.  We opted for a glazed donut with strawberry crunch ice cream and sweet cornflake cereal.  Yes, we shared one for the four of us, so I didn’t end up feeling *too* bad about this decadent treat.

The verdict?  Well, as D concluded, you could pretty much make this at home, with donuts and ice cream.  It is an interesting concept though, especially how they seal the donut, and the play with warm and cool.  I don’t think we’ll go again, but it was fun to try.

Getty Villa & Bay Cities Italian Deli

Going to the Getty Villa has been on our “to-do” list for a while.  Neither D nor I had ever been, although we had visited the Getty Center pre-kids.  Since they offer a deal where you can park at the Villa for $15 and park at the Getty Center for free if you visit the same day, we ambitiously decided to visit both.

005
There was some sort of Corvette convention in the parking lot.  Smile

006

012

We checked out iPod Touches for a free audio tour.  This was a big hit with the kids.

009

We briefly visited the “Family Forum”, which had some activities for the kids.  n’s shadow cracks me up.

011

Of course, D had to get in on the action too.

The grounds were beautiful and there was a lot of Greek art and architecture.

For lunch we ate at Bay Cities Italian Deli in Santa Monica.  We ordered one Eggplant Parmesan and one Godmother sandwich.

034033

The bread was super yum—loved the bubbly crust.  The ordering system is kind of confusing.  Someone pointed D to the pre-made Godmother sandwiches in the back, which saved him waiting in a take-a-number line.  I had to wait for the eggplant sandwich in a separate line by the door, though.  A bit chaotic, but worth it, and we even found a shady table in front.  Two sandwiches were definitely enough for this family.

Grand Canyon: Breakfast @ El Tovar

157

On Saturday morning we went to El Tovar, the famous lodge situated on the edge of the Grand Canyon for breakfast.

159

It was built over one hundred years ago.  The inside is rustic, yet classy.

149147

141

I had read about the fancy hot chocolate service, so we ordered it.  There is whipped cream and chocolate chips in the cup, and the hot chocolate is poured over it from a carafe.  This made the hot chocolate not at all warm enough for my mom’s liking, but it ended up being the perfect temperature for the kids from the first sip.

146143

We ordered two sweet dishes: pancake trio with pinion nut butter and prickly pear syrup and wafffle with lemon curd and blueberries.

We also ordered two savory dishes, which were quite hearty: breakfast burrito with pork and breakfast quesadilla with beef.

145144

These dishes were definitely enough for the six of us.  It was a nice way to end our vacation.

156153152

Afterwards we took one last glance at the canyon from the back of the hotel property.  The bottom picture shows two huge birds (turkey vultures?) that were just hanging out on the rocks.  I definitely need to look for better zoom capability on my next camera.

165

On our journey home, there were some low-lying cumulus clouds that fascinated me.  I also read that a storm hit the Grand Canyon the afternoon we left, so we just missed it.  Our next national park trip is already in the works: Kings & Sequoia!

Grand Canyon: Rim Trail and Maswik Pizza Pub

071

On our way back into the park on Friday morning, we stopped by the entrance picture to take a picture.  There was a actually a place for the camera to take a timer shot, which we did, but I like this pic better.

077

We also saw this guy, an elk, up close and personal on the way into the park.

We met my parents at Bright Angel Café, close to the Visitor’s Center for breakfast.  In retrospect, we probably should have bought breakfast at the General Store, since the selection was pretty limited.  We also picked up some sandwiches for a picnic lunch.

078

The kids were able to become the first junior rangers of the day.  It was nice that we beat the crowds at the Visitors Center.

090

Most of the rim trail is paved, and at some parts you are quite close to the edge.  It is a very easy trail, perfect for the kids.  It was also an overcast day, so at least we did not hear any complaints about it being too hot.  n refused to wear his sweatshirt, however, which became a different battle.

118

You cannot really see it in the picture above, but there was a squirrel sitting precariously at the edge of the rock, which was entertaining to all of us tourists.

116

It was interesting to see different parts of the Colorado River.

We took turns walking between points and taking the shuttle.  This was the Powell monument.

092

Visiting this part of the rim provided a nice escape from the crowds that we experienced at Mather Point.  We were often the only party at many of the lookouts.

087083080

On the west, the end point of the Rim Trail is Hermits Rest.  There is a gift store and small café.

128

We found a picnic bench and ate our sandwiches.  By this time, the wind was kicking up and it was getting cold!  I was afraid it was going to start to rain, but it did not.  We ate quickly and hopped back onto the shuttle.

132

When we returned to the Marketplace, we did a little souvenir shopping.

136

No, this hat did not come home with us.

137

Then, we checked into the Yavapai Lodge.  This was definitely a step up from the Red Feather, and the kids were happy to play, watch a little tv and rest.

138

This was the view from our room.  It felt nice and cozy.

139

For dinner we met my parents and ate at the pizza pub at Maswick Lodge.  We shared two side salads and a pizza.  I thought the pizza was pretty good—the crust was nice and crisp and not too thick.  I thought this was a good option for eating inside the park.

Grand Canyon: Yavapai Cafeteria and Mather Point Sunset

After the ranger presentation, we headed back to the visitor center on one of the shuttles.  The shuttles were convenient, and the kids even found them fun!

134

135

035

The shuttles were often crowded and standing room only.  The drivers ranged from grumpy to impossibly cheerful, such as the one woman driver who would say “Doors are closing [dramatic pause]…and the bus is rolling” after every single stop.

We checked into our respective hotels.  My parents stayed at Yavapai Lodge both nights.  I was unable to get a room there for both nights, so we split our stay between the Red Feather Lodge and Yavapai.  The Red Feather is just outside the park, and was a little cheaper, but not by much.  I would give it a 2.5 star rating.  We returned to the park to meet up with my parents to eat dinner at the Yavapai cafeteria.

039038

My expectations for the food were not too high, but it turned out to be pretty good.  Baba declared the chicken pot pie “better than Marie Callender’s”.  D and I split the half chicken dinner (and D had some of n’s hot dog) while Zaza and k shared a hamburger.

043

We also split two soft serves for dessert.

045

It was nice to sit by these big windows.

047

After dinner, we headed back to Mather Point to catch the sunset.

049

053

Some dramatic clouds were rolling in, which muted the sunset colors, but made for an interesting sky.

Yellowfin Fish Grill

Yesterday we tried a new restaurant in Irvine, Yellowfin Fish Grill.  We used a deal on Yelp which was $20 for $10.

011

There is a free tortilla chip bar with various salsas/sauces.  The kids were intrigued with the different colored tortilla chips.

012

One of the plates we split was a fried shrimp and fish plate ($9.99).  The shrimp were excellent—plump and crispy.  However, the batter on the fish didn’t stay on too well and became soggy quickly.  Maybe we should just get the all shrimp plate next time.

014

The other plate we split was red snapper with lemon garlic aioli ($9.99).  We also upgraded our side to grilled zucchini in order to meet the $20 threshold.  Unfortunately, while the portion was large, the fish tasted too “fishy”.  I’m not sure if this is a red snapper thing, or it just was not a good piece of fish.  The reviews on Yelp are pretty good, though, so I would recommend trying another type of fish.

TK Noodle & Grill

Last weekend we ventured to another new restaurant in Irvine—Thuan Kieu Noodle & Grill.  Apparently the original locations are in Garden Grove and Westminster.  D and I really enjoy Vietnamese food.  Don’t laugh, but one of our go-to restaurants at our old home in Anaheim was called Pho Today.  We were happy to find out that tasty Vietnamese food is now available very close by again.

013012011

We ordered two Daily Specials ($6.50), which consists of chicken, rice or noodles, and egg rolls.  It was a good thing we ordered one with rice and one with noodles because I totally forgot that Vietnamese bun (rice noodles) is usually accompanied by peanuts.  I love the crunch and the contrast of the cool noodles/vegetables with the warm chicken and egg rolls.  The kids preferred the rice anyway, so it all worked out.  D and I also shared the rare beef pho.  It was also very good, but not enough noodles for us.  We ended up putting some of the noodles from the chicken dish in the soup.

Welcome to Irvine, TK Noodle!

Irvine Railroad & Doner G

On Sunday afternoon we went to Irvine Regional Park’s birthday celebration and rode the train for $2 each (usually $5 each).  There was quite a crowd.

015016

020019

The ride was not very long, but there was a nice little narration that talked about some points of interest.  I do not think it would have been worth $20, but $8 was an ok value.

021

028

We ate a picnic lunch and then looked for a good place for the kids to ride bikes.  Not really seeing any, we decided to stop at the playground.  k and n kept themselves busy for a looong time, pumping by themselves.  This was the first time that n kept himself going for such a good period, so it was cause for celebration.

For dinner, we tried a new place called Doner G, which serves Turkish and Mediterranean food.

032031030029

We ordered a beef plate and chicken pita.  We used a coupon from the Irvine Crossroads Shopping Center website for a free side of hummus.  Everything tasted really good, even though the kids were skeptical when we said we were eating Mediterranean food.  D nods his head when he likes his food, and there was a lot of head nodding during this meal.  The people eating there seemed to be a lot of different ethnicities.  The service was friendly and fast.  I feel like there are so many restaurants to try, but we get in a rut of relying on a few places that are close by and cheap.  It was nice to try something new.

The Melt

Friday afternoon I took the kids to the Grand Opening for a new grilled cheese restaurant at the Spectrum called The Melt.  They were offering a free sandwich and side, and you know that I cannot pass up a chance for free food.

005

The signage reminded me of The Veggie Grill, which is right across the way.  We had to wait in line for around 30 minutes.  The process was very streamlined: they let in 12 people at a time, and there was a set sandwich and side (no choice was given) which I guess changed throughout the day.

002

During our wait, they handed out free mini samples of their vanilla shake.  I liked the vanilla bean specks, but it tasted a little thin.

007

As a surprise, they also gave everyone a free drink from the soda fountain.  The sodas had sugar (as opposed to high fructose corn syrup), and I allowed the kids to have one (this is quite rare, so they were quite excited).  I did not allow them to drink the whole thing, however!

006

You can see the food being prepared.

008

Our sandwich turned out to be the “Mac Daddy” and the side was a Caesar salad/chips.

009

Yes, it was carb central.  No, it would not have been my first choice.  Of course, the kids loved it.  n even ate the same amount of sandwich as k and me!   (We saved one meal for D at home).

010

Aren’t those grilled cheese croutons so cute?

All told, our order of three sandwiches, sides, and drinks would have cost $33!

Snow Station

A new store named Snow Station opened in Tustin, in the same shopping center as Cream Pan.  We were able to visit during the Grand Opening, when they were giving away a free mini size (which was actually not that small).  It is usually $2.95, including one topping.  n and I chose passion fruit while k and D opted for mango.  I would recommend getting the “popping balls” as a topping as opposed to mochi bits, which get hard when they are cold.  I thought it would taste like shaved ice, but it is really different, as it is soy-based, and the flavor is infused, rather than poured on top.  If we ever go again, we would probably just share a bigger size, but it is always a treat for the kids when they do not have to share.  Maybe someday I will try the horchata flavor.
