Paper Lantern Dumpling House Review

It has been a while since I have posted a restaurant review.  Last weekend we were in the mood to try something new.  We decided on Paper Lantern Dumpling House in the Diamond Jamboree shopping center.

First off, I like the clean, modern decor of this restaurant.

Their menu is simple (left is in Chinese, right is in English) and you order at the counter.

Here is what we ordered:

IMG_1985

Chinese broccoli ($4.50).  This is a simple dish, but the garlic and the accompanying sauce made it so good!  The kids liked it too!

IMG_1987

Two orders of Pork Xiao Long Bao (soup dumplings) ($4.75 each).  We first had these at Din Tai Fung, the gold standard of XLB.  The wrappers here were not quite as delicate, and the dumplings were not quite as juicy but they are less expensive and there are no insanely long wait times to contend with.  Worth a try!

k, the soup dumpling master!

IMG_1990

Two orders of “beef wrap” ($5.50 for 3 pieces). This was SO delicious!  It is a flaky green onion pancake stuffed with beef, along with cucumber and a flavorful sauce.  This is a “must” order.

Soup dumplings, that is!

Spring Break: Rio + Pho Bosa + Hash House A Go Go

After our failed attempt at visiting Red Rock Canyon, we drove back to Las Vegas to check into our room at the Rio.  The room was super cheap–I think the resort fees were more than the room itself!  Sometimes it is nice to be off of The Strip’s hustle and bustle.  Our room was a long way from the elevator, which made it really quiet.

IMG_1680

Rio is known as an all-suite hotel, and it was nice to have some extra room, although you cannot really tell from this picture.

IMG_1701

Spacious bathroom.

The kids quickly made themselves at home.

I looked up restaurants nearby and we ended up at Pho Bosa.  We had a prime parking space at the hotel that we did not want to risk losing, so we walked to the restaurant which was about one long block away.  The sun was still up and there were no shady people around, so it was fine.

Yelp did not disappoint us!  D ordered pho.  I tried a little and the broth was really good!

I had the Brisket Banh Mi.  The meat was definitely a step above what I am accustomed to in a banh mi.

The kids split a brisket panini.  I was wondering if it would be enough for them, and it was.

Especially since we also ordered garlic parmesean tots!

I am a big garlic fan, so this dish was right up my alley.

For dessert, we ordered boba tea to-go.

For breakfast, we ate at Hash House A Go Go in the Rio.  According to a quick search of LimByLim, the last time we ate here was pre-kids!

This location is quite more spacious than the one we went to in San Diego.

IMG_1685

Knowing about the large portions, we only ordered two entrees for the four of us.  We still could not finish our food.

IMG_1688

Andys Famous Sage Fried Chicken Benedict served on a fresh split biscuit with tomato, spinach, smoked bacon, griddled mozzarella, chipotle cream scrambled eggs with mashed potatoes.  This dish was an explosion of flavors!

IMG_1689

We also had the apple cinnamon flapjack.  This one was kind of disappointing because it was still dough-y around the apples.  I guess it is difficult to cook a pancake when it is this huge!

IMG_1691

If we go again, I want to try the chicken and waffles.

Food coma!  Hash House A Go Go in Las Vegas has a kid-friendly atmosphere with meals that are perfect for sharing.

Ladies Who Lunch Birthday Celebration

My college roommates decided to get together for a joint birthday celebration.  We kind of had a difficult time figuring out what do since we all have different interests.  First we ate lunch at Las Brisas in Laguna Beach.  I had never been to this restaurant before, so I was excited to try it out.  Parking was a hassle, so it was a good thing that we carpooled.

We started out with the fried calamari appetizer.

I ordered the tostada salad with shrimp.  Underneath the salad there was a tostada shell and black beans which made it more filling.  The guacamole was also really good.

Then we went outside to take some pictures with beautiful backdrop.  It was a gorgeous day after a couple of rainy days.

We walked around a little bit and had some ice cream.

Then we drove to Irvine to do an escape room called Unlocked OC.  Two of us had done an escape room before, but it was my first time.  It ended up being really fun!  We ended up “escaping”, but not without asking for a lot of clues via walkie-talkie.  It was definitely challenging, and not scary, which one of us was concerned about.

It ended up being such a fun afternoon.  I am so glad that we have kept in touch after all of these years.

Nine Year Old Birthday Party @ Benihana

After we went skiing we had a birthday dinner scheduled for n at Benihana in Newport Beach.

The chef hat kids menus kept them busy while waiting to be seated.

Hosting seven active 8 and 9 year old boys was quite an experience!  D saw a co-worker and they were joking how we have a big family–ha!

I was going to skip the fried rice, until I remembered that it is a big part of the “show”.  The boys’ commentary during the onion volcano is pretty funny.

There was a lively rendition of happy birthday for n.  I think we heard it about three other times that night for other parties as well.  Are they really singing in Japanese the second time?  I do not even know!

2018-03-23

For dessert, there was a choice of rainbow sherbet or vanilla, chocolate, or green tea ice cream.  n received a special sundae with some whipped cream, chocolate sauce and a pocky stick.

image

This was our keepsake photo taken by the server.  The boys also chose a ceramic mug to as a souvenir since I signed up for Kabuki Kids.  I also bought Ramune soda from Cost Plus World Market as a favor.

All in all, the party worked out well.  I think it works for a wide range of ages, too.  I liked that there was minimal planning, and that the Benihana experience includes food and entertainment.  I do not know why, but hosting birthday parties makes me anxious.  My only regret is that I should have told the parents to pick up the boys in two hours, instead of one and a half hours.  I felt bad that they had to wait around while we were eating dessert and picking out the mugs since the service was a bit slow.

Pea Soup Andersens: Santa Nella

We have been up and down I-5 countless times, but had never stopped in at Pea Soup Andersens.  This past summer, we finally tried the food at this iconic road stop.

Not many restaurants can say that they have been around for close to 100 years!

Of course, we had to try the famous pea soup in a bread bowl.  I liked how the toppings came separately so you could customize your own bowl.  We all enjoyed this.

I also wanted to try the Monte Cristo sandwich.  I think the only other place that I have ordered this is at Disneyland.  I would definitely suggest splitting this entrée with others, as it is decadent.  The raspberry jam provides a nice sweet counterpoint to the ham/cheese.

D ordered the club sandwich, was pretty good as club sandwiches go.  Even though D was skeptical about only ordering two entrees and a soup, it turned out that it was plenty to sustain the four of us on the rest of our trip up the I-5.

Next we stopped at Beyond Bread to pick up our dinner to eat later.  This local chain was quite large and crowded.

P1050738

We split a lemon bar while we waited for our to-go order.

There were many dips in the road on our way to the east side of Saguaro National Park that the kids thought were quite fun.

We were able to take a picture by the sign this time.

P1050772

We share a turkey avocado sandwich and a roast beef brie sandwich.  As you can see, they did skimp on the brie!  These were hefty sandwiches, so two was plenty for the four of us.

I was not sure what to expect from the Holiday Caravan.  I imagined some strings of Christmas lights on the saguaros, perhaps with santa hats and sunglasses.  Well, it turned out that is was really just a group drive along the loop that we had already taken, but at night.  There were a few stops where the park ranger had some commentary which he tried to relate to the holiday season.  One stop did have luminarias lighting the path which was a nice touch.  The visitor center also had some warm apple cider and prickly pear preserves samples, which was a nice touch.

Exploring Beacon Park in Irvine

When I received a flyer in the mail offering $10 in food truck bucks at Beacon Park in Irvine for one of their “Friday Night Happenings”, we had to go.

We decided on dessert crepes at Crepes Bonaparte.

P1040148

We ordered two “Spicy Apple Bottom” crepes, which made the kids laugh, of course.

P1040146

I also scored a free scoop of vanilla ice cream for following them on Instagram.

P1040147

The chunks of apple were huge!  I would definitely recommend this crepe.

P1040149

The main reason for the gathering was to entice people to buy homes in the new neighborhood.  However, the models were closed, which I did not understand.  Instead, we checked out the park, including this fancy basketball court.

P1040150

They hung chandeliers in the trees–fancy!

P1040154

The kids loved the park, so I promised them we would return.  In fact, I have grand plans of exploring a lot of different parks in Orange County with them this summer.

A Tale of Two Sandwiches

https://farm9.staticflickr.com/8638/16674790101_2bf3e94b2d.jpg
Last week, we scored on free sandwiches. The first was from the grand opening event at The Bronx Sandwich Company, in Tustin. The pastrami sandwiches were really good! I also liked the bread, which is from OC Baking Co., I believe. The regular deli sandwiches were okay, but we’ll be back for the pastrami.
https://farm9.staticflickr.com/8624/16674783941_8400636bd8.jpg
The second free sandwich was from the Corner Bakery. They had sign-ups for their Asian pork sandwich. It was pretty good, if you are not expecting an authentic bank mi. I really liked the flavorful dipping sauce that came with it, since the pork did not have much flavor on its own. The canned jalapeño peppers were not a nice touch–reminded me of nachos at a baseball game. However, the rest of the vegetables were nice and fresh and crunchy. They provided a nice contrast to the soft meat and bread.
